“Il Poggione shows why it is one of the top estates in Montalcino with these new releases. Both 2014 Rossos and the 2011 Brunello are terrific. Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci describe 2011 as a tough year because of the intense summer heat. There will be no Riserva in 2011, while production of the straight Brunello is around 150,000 bottles, down significantly from 230,000 that were made in 2010. The Brunellos are made with submerged-cap fermentation and spend three years in large French oak, with the Riserva seeing an additional year in cask.”  – Antonio Galloni

Drinking window: 2022 – 2040

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is magnificent. Huge swaths of tannin coat the palate as the 2010 shows off its power, breadth and overall intensity. Plum, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the many notes that hit the palate. The Riserva is dark, powerful and brooding. It will require at least a handful of years before it becomes approachable. These old vines, planted in 1964, confer weight, power and gravitas, all qualitites that come through loud and clear on the huge, explosive finish.

Drinking window: 2020 – 2040

A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers notable depth and intensity. Il Poggione’s 2011 is one of the richest, most powerful wines of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves and new leather are some of the first nuances that open up. With time in the glass, the 2011 becomes more lifted, as brighter red cherry and raspberry-infused flavors gradually release. This is a rare 2011 that demands at least a good few years in the cellar. In 2011, Il Poggione did not bottle a Riserva. All the juice went into the straight Brunello.

89 pts                    Il Poggione 2014 Rosso di Montalcino
Drinking window: 2016 – 2024

Il Poggione’s 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is classy, polished and refined. Sweet tobacco, licorice, smoke and dark spices add layers of nuance to a core of silky dark fruit in a perfumed, slender Rosso that will drink well for the next handful of years. This is one of the better 2014 Rossos I have tasted so far. The 2014 was aged mostly in cask, with the addition of around 20% French oak.
