The cold air from the Balkans brought the temperatures down: highs around 25°C (77°F) and lows around 14°C (57°F). However, the drought caused fires in some parts of Tuscany, especially near the coast.
The vines,as shown in the photo, have started the veraison and we are 10 days ahead versus last year. The current climate situation has been compared to the 2003 vintage, but our general manager and winemaker, Fabrizio Bindocci, believes that the 1975 vintage, which he remembers well, was very similar to this one so far. The vines are still in good health and the vegetation still fresh but we anticipated the thinning of the grapes so to lower the load of the ripening vines.
During the last several years, we prepared the system for emergency irrigation, a practice that is now admitted by the production rules and that help, in vintages such as this, increase the quality.
