Spollonatura – The beginning of the pruning process

Spollonatura – The beginning of the pruning process

The good weather has come back; in the past several days we had partly cloudy weather with lows around 12°C (54°F) and highs around 20-22°C (68°F-72°F). The weather is expected it to remain stable for the next few days.

Meanwhile in the vineyards we are working for the “spollonatura”: this is very important work consisting of removing the  buds born on the trunk of the vine by hand , therefore reducing the number of buds that will produce grapes. This is the first step of the pruning process and it is crucial because it reduces the production of the grapes early in the season and the nutrients concentrate toward a smaller number of buds. In the pictures you see the vines before and after the spollonatura.
