2010 Il Poggione Brunello is Epic

We are thrilled by the newest post regarding 2010 Brunello di Montalcino on the Tuscan Vines blog. We are, of course, glad to hear John enjoyed our 2010 Brunello and are excited to share his highly complimentary review and 96 point rating below. From Tuscan Vines: “Tenuta Il Poggione, along with the iconic Biondi Santi and Frescobaldi, is one of three original producers of Brunello di Montalcino. For over a century, the Franceschi family has been tending their farm southwest of Montalcino and producing wines of stature and elegance. With vineyards at 400 meters above sea level, the cool breezes from the Mediteranean, which is only 30 minutes by car from this portion of the Brunello zone, allow for cool nights and even ripening as the gentle winds help to prevent rot and fungus in the vineyards. “Winemaker Alessandro Bindocci is at the top of his game, and his 2010 Il Poggione Brunello is epic. In the glass, the wine is a near opaque ruby red with intense aromas of crushed cherry, flowers, new leather, and herbs. On the palate, the purity of the wine is amazing. Juicy and fresh with abundant red fruit, pipe tobacco and savory herb components, this well structured and balanced wine is one of the benchmarks of the vintage for me. Stupendous. 96... Read more >

Wine Spectator Names 2010 Brunello Number 4 Wine of 2015!!!

We are thrilled to share that Wine Spectator has named Il Poggione’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino in its Top 100 Wines of 2015. Our 2010 Brunello secured the number 4 spot of wines rated in 2015! Here is the link to the Top 10 List of 2015: Wine Spectator Top 100 – Il Poggione Make sure to check out the video narrated by Bruce Sanderson! Of the Il Poggione winery, Bruce Sanderson writes: “This tradition-minded property is currently owned by the fifth generation of the Franceschi family. Estate manager Fabrizio Bindocci started in 1976, first responsible for viticulture, then adding winemaking duties in 1999. Il Poggione’s 320 acres of vineyards range in elevation from 500 to 1,500 feet, giving Bindocci, now joined by his son Alessandro, the resources to make a balanced Brunello each vintage; in 2010, favorable growing conditions contributed to something truly special. The wine macerates for 20 to 25 days on the skins with a submerged cap, then ages three years in 3,000- and 5,000-liter oak casks.” Here are the Wine Spectator tasting notes for the 2010 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino, which received 95 points: “Rich, with excellent density, ripe cherry and plum fruit, and a well-integrated structure. Licorice, earth and tobacco notes add depth while this cruises to a long, tobacco- and mineral-tinged finish. Shows balance and grip. Best from 2018 through 2033.” —Bruce Sanderson This is a great honor for the Il Poggione winery and our winemaking... Read more >
