Saturday I went to San Giovanni D’Asso, a small hamlet in the Crete Senesi, famous for its festival celebrating the white truffle of the Crete Senesi.
Crete Senesi, or Senese clays, is a beautiful area of Tuscany not far from Montalcino, where the grey color of the soil is reminiscent of a lunar landscape.
This area is famous for its white truffles, and since the festival was winding down, I decided to go buy some truffles for dinner!
This is an important festival for the town of San Giovanni, and many locals and tourists go there to buy truffles and truffled products. I stopped to visit the truffle museum and bought a couple of white truffles.
On my way home I stopped at one of my favorite pasta makers in Montalcino to buy freshly made tagliatelle, which I prepared with butter and a generous shaving of white truffle. Of course a glass of Brunello di Montalcino was the perfect pairing for it.
